How to Attribute WhatsApp Conversations to Non-Meta Ads

Businesses running Google Search, Display or other non-Meta ads often send traffic to a landing page with a WhatsApp call-to-action. These platforms can't see what happens after a click into WhatsApp, so campaigns can't be optimized for conversions and ads can't be compared on which ones actually turn into conversations. This article covers sending a WhatsApp click event back to Google Ads, then connecting that data to respond.io for full funnel visibility.

Benefits of attributing non-Meta ad conversions

Attribute non-Meta ad traffic to:

  • Optimize Google Ads campaigns using real WhatsApp engagement data instead of link clicks alone

  • Track the full funnel from ad click to WhatsApp conversation across Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and

    respond.io

  • Identify which ads and landing pages generate the most valuable leads

Method Objectives

  • Send an optimization goal to Google Ads so campaigns can be optimized for WhatsApp conversions

  • Create funnel visibility to see how ad clicks convert into WhatsApp conversations

Send an optimization goal to Google Ads

Use this objective when non-Meta ads (Google Search, Display or portal ads) drive traffic to a landing page with a WhatsApp call-to-action.

  1. Build a landing page dedicated to the Google Ads campaign, and add a WhatsApp call-to-action button to it.

  2. Add a Click ID to the WhatsApp link to identify which ad click led to the conversation. Add pre-filled message text to the link, for example "Hi, I found you through Google Ad 1," to identify the ad source once the conversation starts.

Pre-filled text does not sync automatically with Google Ads or GA4 — it only tags the source inside respond.io. For visibility across both platforms, complete Create funnel visibility below.

  1. Create a tag in Google Tag Manager (GTM):

    1. Navigate to Tags > New.

    2. Name the tag, for example Google Ads – WhatsApp Widget Click.

    3. Select Tag Configuration, and choose Google Ads Conversion Tracking or Google Analytics: GA4 Event.

    4. Enter the Conversion ID and Label for Google Ads, or the Measurement ID and Event Name for GA4.

    5. Leave Triggering empty for now.

  2. Create a trigger for the WhatsApp click:

    1. Navigate to Triggers > New.

    2. Name the trigger, for example WhatsApp Widget Click.

    3. Select All Elements, then Some Clicks.

    4. Set the condition Click Element matches CSS selector .respond-io-widget.

    5. Save the trigger.

  3. Open the tag from step 3, and select the WhatsApp Widget Click trigger. Save.

  4. Preview and publish the container:

    1. Click Preview in Google Tag Manager, open the website and click the WhatsApp button.

    2. Confirm the tag fires in Tag Assistant.

    3. Click Submit, then Publish once verified.

  5. Verify the event. In GA4, navigate to Reports > Realtime and confirm the event (for example whatsapp_cta_click) appears. In Google Ads, import the GA4 event as a conversion so Google Ads can optimize campaigns around it.

Create funnel visibility

Once the optimization goal is live, combine Google Analytics and respond.io data to see how ad traffic converts into WhatsApp conversations.

  1. View the Click ID event (for example whatsapp_cta_click) in GA4 under Events > Realtime. Filter by utm_source or campaign parameters to compare performance by ad group or landing page.

  2. Connect the event to respond.io. Create a Workflow using the Conversation Opened trigger, and use the conversation's first incoming message (the pre-filled text) in a Condition Step to tag the Contact or fill a custom field, for example utm_source = google and landing_page = lp1.

  3. Combine the datasets in Google Sheets (optional). Export conversion data, including Click IDs, from Google Ads. Export Contact data (tags or custom field values) from respond.io. Combine both in a Google Sheet to analyze ad-to-chat attribution and campaign ROI.

FAQ and troubleshooting

Can a business combine a CRM-first and a respond.io-first attribution setup?

Yes, technically. Running both a centralized customer relationship management (CRM) system and respond.io as parallel sources of truth complicates the data infrastructure, and attribution becomes unreliable without careful tracking and syncing logic across both systems.

What happens if attribution data is missing?

Without clear routing of inbound leads, attribution reports show ambiguous or "API-created" contacts that don't identify the lead source. Confirm the Click ID and pre-filled text are present on the landing page's WhatsApp link before publishing the campaign.
