For YOOX, this was a natural development. YOOX noticed that their personal shopping team was regularly using their personal WhatsApp account to handle sales with customers. Sorabel was one of the original brands that Facebook had accepted to test the WhatsApp Business API. Interestingly, we found a Twitter post from 2015 detailing that Sorabel had changed their WhatsApp number. Sorabel uses its WhatsApp Business Account in two main ways. They help their customers look for products when they're not interested in browsing on their own. They also use the account to send notifications about shipping and payment.
For Sorabel, the payment process can get complicated as once check out is complete the company allows the customer to complete the payment via bank transfer and gives 48 hours to do so. Once the bank transfer has been made the company asks the customers to forward them the transfer information. We suspect this process may be prone to hiccups, so it is quite helpful to be able to talk to an actual person on WhatsApp in real-time to resolve any payment problems.
Is the Sorabel WhatsApp Account A Success?
According to Wahyu Saputra, the head of customer-facing products at Sorabel, the introduction of WhatsApp was a tremendous success. It has become the number one source of inbound traffic and has good engagement with 90% of outbound messages read, which is twice as high as SMS.

Once the user has figured out what they want, they click the WhatsApp link on the Instagram page and start messaging the small business over WhatsApp.
The conversation enables them to agree on a few simple things: the price of the cake and when it should be ready. One last interaction happens when selling via WhatsApp – one that traditional e-commerce folks would consider clunky, payment.
Since there is no easy way to arrange payment, Brazilians have resorted to sending bank transfers to pay. Then they use WhatsApp to send the record of the transaction to the small business owner as proof of payment.

This business model has been so successful that WhatsApp is in the process of creating a few innovations to solve the payment gateway problem. This next story is an inspirational one. Samar al-Mallah is a homemaker turned successful businesswoman, who fled Syria with her family to start a new life in Istanbul. Despite all obstacles, Samar has created a thriving catering business using WhatsApp for Sales, called Karadish Kitchen.
Samar is the head chef of Karadish Kitchen. Her husband Youssef Alozon creates all desserts, pastries, and manages food deliveries. Every weekday morning Karadish Kitchen sends out WhatsApp messages announcing their dishes of the day to their customers.

They only take orders for food delivery and catering within Istanbul. If you’d like them to cook for a special event, you should contact them at least two days in advance.
Samar loved cooking and realized she had a wide circle of Syrian and Arab friends on WhatsApp. She began publicizing and promoting her Karadish Kitchen dishes, taking photos of her cooking and sharing them on WhatsApp. As she got better at taking pictures of her food she started getting more and more orders.
To keep up with demand, Samar capped her first WhatsApp group when it reached 150 people. The Karadish Kitchen has since expanded to provide meals and catering services to a larger audience with a second dedicated WhatsApp account.
Karadish Kitchen also takes note of which dishes are popular based on the responses they get on WhatsApp to the daily pictures and meal descriptions they send out. They also realized that some of their clients needed orders delivered. Youssef started delivering meals to customers who were unable to reach the apartment where Karadish Kitchen is run from.

While Karadish Kitchen handles selling through WhatsApp, Samar's success story also caught the attention of a popular Turkish foodie website called Culinary Backstreets. They are working to gain a small grant to expand their business into a commercial kitchen, after their success using WhatsApp for Sales has caused them to outgrow their home kitchen.
