How is the MCP Server different from respond.io's other integrations, like n8n, Zapier, or the Developer API?

n8n, Zapier, and the Developer API let respond.io connect out to other apps and workflows. The MCP Server works the other way — it lets an AI assistant like Claude or ChatGPT act inside respond.io directly, using natural language instead of a workflow or API call.

Can my AI assistant access anything I can't on respond.io?

No. Every action through the MCP Server is scoped to your existing respond.io user role — connecting an AI assistant like Claude or ChatGPT never grants it additional access, and permissions update immediately if your role changes.

Do I need to self-host the MCP Server?

No. The MCP Server is hosted on respond.io's own infrastructure by default — you authorize it with OAuth and nothing to install or maintain. A self-hosted option is still available via a Developer API token for teams that specifically need it.

Does using the MCP Server use AI credits on respond.io?

No. Everything you can do over ChatGPT and Claude — looking up Contacts, sending messages, managing Conversations, configuring AI Agents, viewing Workflows and updating Workspace settings — is a platform action, not an AI feature. AI Credits are only consumed when an AI feature processes a request inside respond.io.

The AI used in an MCP connection is your assistant's, not respond.io's. The tokens it spends understanding your request and holding the conversation come from the third-party AI provider you’re using, and are billed under your plan with them.

Note: Setting up an AI Agent over MCP consumes no AI Credits on respond.io, but the AI Agent's responses consume AI Credits once it's live. Learn more here.
